El músico que quiso ser presidente

El pasado 2 de agosto se cumplían once años de la muerte del más grande de los artistas africanos, Fela Kuti.  Un artista con más de setenta discos repletos de joyas del estilo que él mismo creó, el Afrobeat. Canciones que pasan la barrera de los diez minutos y que tras grabarlos y presentarlos jamás volvía a tocar porque pensaba que un artista debía crear, no repetirse.

Fela Kuti, Nigeria 1938, nació en una familia de clase media comprometida con la lucha anticolonial de la época. Kuti marchaba a Londres a finales de los cincuenta para estudiar medicina, aunque finalmente se matriculó en el Trinity Collegue of Music. El hervidero musical de la capital inglesa le influyó en los caminos que habría de tomar.

Un año después del ataque a la sede de su partido Kuti se casaba con 27 mujeres, la mayoría bailarinas y coristas para conmemorar a los fallecidos en el ataque. Meses después en  una redada preparada le encontraban marihuana en su vivienda. Kuti se libraría esa vez de la cárcel gracias a que otro detenido que no se drogaba le prestó mierda limpia para pasar el control de heces. De aquello salió una buena historia que el propio Kuti solía contar y una gran canción, Expensive shit.
